Biography     version française         versión española

Holder of a diploma in musicology, after brilliant classical studies at the Conservatoire National of the Saint-Maur region, Jean-Baptiste Marino fell under the spell of the bold and coloured modulations of the cante flamenco.

In a passionate bond since the age of 11 with the object of his dreams : the guitar - a Dionysiac instrument par excellence - the artist walked the Spanish lands for a time and did particularly well in numerous examinations. He played with Chano Lobato, Ketama, Juan Manuel Canizares, Mariano Cruceta, Malou and later in France with Idir, Takfarinas, Juan Carlos Cacerés and Louis Winsberg.

Innovative and creative, Jean-Baptiste Marino also turned to the cinema : he performed the original soundtrack of "Gazon Maudit".

While preparing his first compositions, he took part in the play "Le Cid", performed at the Theatre de la Madeleine in Paris.

In 1999, Jean-Baptiste Marino performed in Japan for six months, in one of the Meccas of the flamenco, at the tablao "El Flamenco", as the leading guitar player of Mariano Cruceta, a dancer from Madrid. Thus he made known his personal musical voice, which was much appreciated, according to the Japanese specialized press.

In July 2000, with seven other artists, Jean-Baptiste Marino performed each night, for a whole month, and brought a personal, deep, cosy tone to the show.

His compositions, tinged with poetical value, can be heard yet in his first album released in 1999. At the moment, the artist prepares his second album and is performing with Louis Winsberg's band : Jaleo. The cd of the group will be released in October 2001.

After 100 concerts which the group Janeo throughout the world (Africa, Europe and the USA), the next step is France before heading abroad again.
In September 2003 Jaleao creates a new show: a new musical rendez-vous point where the ever colorful and singular soul of the band offers flamenco and jazz tonalities. In the wake of this creation a second album is being prepared.

In parallel, Jean-Baptiste Marino performs solo in several festivals (at the Triton in Paris, in Nantes, Saint-Nazaire and Caen) and has recorded a second album (available since June 2004). The flamenco guitarist performs on the stages of Europe (Belgium, Spain, France) together with the band he put together: Isabel Pelaez (danceg and vocals), Miguel Sanchez (Cajon), El Roto (vocals) and José Luis Dominguez (guitar).
Finally J-B Marino has created a trio, together with Nanda Kumar (tablas) and Jean-Christophe Maillard (Saz), which can be heard in jazz clubs in Madrid and Paris (Sunset, Baiser salé, Planète Andalucia). This new musical space embodies an intimate fusion of flamenco jazz and indian music.
